Will this phone run an eSIM? Find out before you buy

  • Dial *#06#
  • Look for an EID
  • Unlocked phones only

The short answer

Type *#06# and look at the screen: an EID means your phone holds an eSIM. It also has to be unlocked, not tied to the carrier that sold it. iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao mostly have no eSIM.

Does my phone support eSIM?

The makers' own lists

A working eSIM is not refunded because a phone cannot install it, so check your phone before you buy.

If your phone is not on the list

Reach for the dial pad and enter *#06#. When an EID appears on that screen, the phone supports eSIM. If it shows only IMEI numbers, it does not. For the last word, follow the makers’ own lists linked above.

Carrier lock

A phone still tied to the carrier that sold it will not accept another eSIM. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

Before you buy

The refund rule does not bend for a working eSIM when the phone cannot install it. Check your phone first.
