Hoi An eSIM: online from the old town to the beach

Hoi An's old town sits between the Thu Bon River and the rice fields. With the eSIM on from Da Nang, the lantern-lit lanes and the beach are both on the map.

  • 50 minutes from Da Nang
  • Walk and cycle
  • Lantern-lit nights

The short answer

An eSIM installed at home works in Hoi An once the line is on and data roaming is on for it. The old town is a 50-minute drive from Da Nang International (DAD), and the town is made for walking and cycling.

Where the signal holds

  • 4G and 5G

    Vietnam's four networks

Viettel, VinaPhone, MobiFone and Vietnamobile all run 4G mobile services, and Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone list 5G as well.

  • Not measured

    Old houses and islands

We have not measured signal inside the old town's merchant houses and assembly halls, or out on the Cham Islands. Save your tickets and a map before you go.

  • Data roaming on

    Your eSIM

The eSIM runs on a Vietnamese network and shows that network's name in your phone's settings. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereDa Nang International (DAD) is a 50-minute drive from the Ancient Town. The Hai Van Bus runs between the airport and Hoi An's Cua Dai parking lot, 07:30 to 16:00 daily, for 120,000 dong, and buses and shuttle vans come in from Hue and Nha Trang too.
  2. Getting aroundWalking and cycling are how the Ancient Town and the countryside are seen; taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the rest, and hotels arrange private cars for trips further afield.
  3. PayingThe currency is the Vietnamese dong. You must declare cash over 15 million dong or 5,000 US dollars when you arrive.
  4. When to goOctober to January brings rain and storms; March to May is bright and mild, and June to August is hot.

Before you go (Hoi An)

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and keep the line switched off until you land. Download offline maps and your tickets while you still have Wi-Fi, in case a merchant house or a boat trip has no signal. On arrival, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
